In the Australian amateur golf championship to-day Sloan Morpeth (New Zealand) defeated E. L. Apperly by 8 up and 6. Morpeth will meet Ryan to-morrow in the final. Mr. Clem Hill, the famous cricketer, was referee in the match between Morpeth and Apperly. Morpeth was 3 up at the end of the morning round. His fine driving and clever iron play both compensated for his weak putting. Apperly was i‘up at the turn. Morpeth missed a putt of 2ft. at the 16th. hole. r fhe next was halved in 3’s, where Apperly played a magnificent mashie shot to Bft. from the pin, but missed the putt. Morpeth holed a putt of 6ft. for a superb “ eagle ” at the 17th., 500yds. Morpeth was home in 35 strokes, and his round was 76. Apperly took 80. Apperly won the 21st. hole with a ’• birdie " 3. Morpeth was 4 up at the 24-th. hole and 6 up at the 28th. The game now took a sensational turn. Apperly duffed his drive, and his hall lay in a drain. He played a short second, from a stance on a footbridge. Then he played a screaming brassie shot on to the green, a distance of almost 300yds., and holed a putt of 30ft. a par 4. Morpeth followed with a long drive, a straight second, and holed his putt from J 2ft., for a “ birdie ” 3. Apperly missed a short putt at the 291 h. hole, and Morpeth won the match. Ryan beat Ilattersley by i up. In the professional championship Bissett beat Thomson, 2 up and 1; Stewart heat James, 8 up and 7. The final will be played on Saturday. E. L. Apperly won the Australian amateur championship in 1920. He is a member of the Australian Golf Club, Sydney. He won the amateur championship of New South Wales in 1920, 1922, and 1927.
