SPORTS AND PASTIMES. (Special to Times.) Rugby. The Otorohanga playing fields were well patronised by spectators on Saturday afternoon, when three contests i were promoted. ' Athletic and Otorohanga seniors first took the field, under the direction of Mr George Eassey. A splendid game 1 1 resulted in a victory for the former, with the scores standing at 11—8. Otewa and Honikiwi seniors then entered the arena under the command of Mr N. Rodgers. The Otewa pack proved its superiority on the day by gaining the honours with a score of 9 as against no score by Honikiwi. The Honikiwi and Otewa juniors next faced each other. A good exhibition of first-class Rugby resulted in neither side being able to score, the game being declared a draw by the referee, Mr George Hyde. Hockey. The ladies’ hockey contest, played at Taumarunul on Saturday afternoon between Waipa and Taumarunul teams, was won by Waipa, after a splendid game, by 2 to 1. Miss Nora McCreadv, of Otorohanga, captained the winning team, of which Miss R. Isaac and Miss Lexie Leatham (Otorohanga) were also players. Rain fell during the game, and in consequence the held was sodden and slippery'. The winning scores were registered by Miss J. Smith and Miss Hazel Stout. Messrs W. Fanthorpe and Peacock were referees. The visitors were entertained to dinner and to a dance in the evening. Tiie same afternoon an interesting contest eventuated at Otorohanga between a men’s team from Te Ivuiti and local players. Some good hockey was enjoyed by a moderate gallery of spectators. Tire game resulted in Otoroiianga’s favour by 4 to 2. Trout Fry for Otorohanga. Mr A. J. McCready, the local representative of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, has been advised that eight cans of young trout are being forwarded to him from the Rotorua hatcheries for liberation in the rivers and streams of this district. It is reported that a colony of shags is playing havoc with the younger trout on the upper reaches of the Waipa River. Annual Drill for Cadets. The annual week’s drill instructions of the Otorohanga and district cadets commenced on Monday, when there was a very satisfactory muster of embryo soldiers. Sergeant-Major Culley, of Hamilton, is in charge of the operations. Successful Operetta. The children of the Otorohanga DisIrict High School produced the sparkling operetta, ‘My Spanish Swceth'cart,’ to a crowded audience. The play r was excellently staged, the whole production reflecting great credit on the painstaking teachers and outside helpers, who left nothing undone to promote the success reached at this the first staging of ‘My Spanish Sweet- j heart’ in Otorohanga. Generous applause from the huge audience was a marked feature of a really entertaining production. The school funds will benefit solidly as a result.
