SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
IMPERIAL BUREAUX. GOVERNMENT TO PARTICIPATE. (By: TePeranli. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Hon. 11. Atrnore, Minister in Charge of the Scientific and Industrial .Research Department, announced to-day that the Government had decided to participate in the scheme of the Imperial Agricultural Research Bureaux, the establishment of which was one of the recommendations made by the Imperial Agricultural Research Conference in 1927, which recommended the establishment of three bureaux and five ’correspondence centres, rs follows: Bureaux. —Soil science, animal nutr'tion, animal health.
Correspondence Centres. Animal genetics, agricultural parashology, plant genetics, fruit production, arid economic botany. Tiie conference, said the ?.linister, was no doubt prompted to take this action in view of the success atiending tiie two bureaux of entomology and mycology which had already been established, and which were rendering conspicuous service to workers in these phases of science throughout tiie Empire. In order io put the bureaux on a proper basis a preliminary financial supervisory body was constituted, representative of all participating Dominions and Crown Colonies. New Zealand was represented on this body by Mr Alexander Crabb, of the High Commissioner's Office, and Mr Novill L. Wright, liaison officer of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It was estimated that the annual cost of the bureaux would reach a total of £20,000, and the contributions of the United Kingdom, Dominions and Crown Colonics were assessed, New Zealand’s annual contribution being fixed for £1250. It was important to realise, said the Minister, that these bureaux in themselves will not undertake any specific research work, but will serve as collecting, 'distributing, publishing, and ■co-ordinating bodies.
