THE EMDEN INCIDENT.
GERMAN RESIDENTS OF SAMOA. GETTING IN TOUCH WITH CRUISER It was reported yesterday that the sighting of the German cruiser Emden by the steamer Tofua on the morning of July 30 in a lagoon near the lighthouse on Wailangilala Island, and the fact that she did not answer the Tofua’s wireless calls, caused considerable surprise at Suva, the cruiser’s previous port of call.
Letters received from Samoa by today’s mail say that a rumour was current there that officers of the Emden asked permission to get in touch with German residents in Samoa, but permission was refused. Afterwards some of these residents were found going out to the Emden in boats.
