MOLESTED A GIRL.

CAMBRIDGE CHEF’S OFFENCE. 1 A chef from one of the Cambridge hotels named Arthur Kemp, aged 37, had a half day off yesterday. He came into Hamilton, where he imbibed pretty freely. Early last evening he was seen to accost a young lady as she was about to step into a motor car. She ignored him and drove off. He then spoke to another girl, claiming acquaintance with her. As she moved away, he took hold of her arm and sought to detain her. When Kemp was to-day charged before Mr. Wyvern Wilson S.M., with common assault and with disorderly behaviour, he pleaded guilty. Sergeant Sweeney stated that accused was undoubtedly under the influence of liquor at the timj. In 1920 he had been convicted and fined £lO for a somewhat similar assault, in which he kissed a girl against her will. Sent to Gaol for Month. His Worship said he could not possibly treat defendant as a first offender as it was only a short time ago that he assaulted another young woman, who screamed and was then released. Accused: It was nine years ago. His Worship said it was no use imposing a fine on accused, as this apparently w'ould not act as a deterrent. It was also no use placing him on probation, as he was a grown man, and would probably break the conditions. It was necessary for the sentence to be of such a nature as to act as a warning to others that young women must not be molested.

Accused was sent to gaol a month.
