MAIN SOUTH ROAD
HAMILTON TO NGARUAWAHIA.
NEW COUNTY PROPOSAL. The deadlock that has arisen between the Waipa County Council and the Highways Board with reference to the reconstruction of the main road between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia was referred to by Mr, W. H. King (president) before a meeting of the Hamilton Agency of the Automobile Association last night. The speaker said he had had a conversation with the Waipa County engineer on the matter, and after hearing the case from the county side he was inclined to agree with the county. If the Highways Board would grant no, more than a £3 to £1 subsidy the County Council felt that a loan proposed on this basis would be turned down by the ratepayers. The engineer stated that the County Council was very anxious to reach finality on the matter and had decided to ask the Highways Board to grant a £3 to £1 subsidy for the permanent reconstruction of the whole of the main arterial road through the county. The engineer felt that a loan under such circumstances would be carried. It was decided to await the result of these negotiations before taking any action.
