THE DAIRY COMPANY.

ELECTION OF DIRECTOR. ADDRESS BY MR FURNISS. Mr J. H. Furniss, a member of the Raglan County Council, who is a candidate for the seat on the directorate of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., owing to the retirement of Mr .Blackett, addressed a meeting of suppliers at Ngaruawahia. Mr S. S. Saulbrey, chairman of the local suppliers’ committee, presided. Mr- Furniss regretted the retirement through ill-health of Mr Blackett, who had done splendid service for the company and the industry. He advocated greater combination among co-opera-tive dairy companies, especially in the matter of marketing. Want of concord had caused the breakdown of control. He advocated wholesale selling of the produce to such bodies as the Co-operative Wholesale Society of Britain, which had a turnover of £300,000,000 annually. Such direct sale would eliminate the middleman. He was strongly in favour of having all testing done by Government officials, and anticipated that this would shortly be the law. This would eliminate unfair competition. Regarding a position on the directorate of the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Go., Mr Furniss considered it a fulltime job, and if elected he would give his whole time to it; and he pledged himself to do so, even to resigning any other position he held if it Interfered with his duty as a director.

After he had answered some questions, Mr Furniss was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
