ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. CHARGE OF CRIMINAL ASSAULT. BAIL REFUSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. Robert Francis Maddox, aged 27, a carpenter, was charged in the Police Court with attempting to murder Jerke Didovich at Northcote on June 28. In reply to a request for bail, Chief Detective Hammond said he objected. Maddox was in a peculiar state of mind, and was very morbid. He (Hammond) was afraid something might happen if accused was released. Mr. Hunt remanded prisoner until July 18, refusing bail. Jerke Didovich, aged 39, a Dalmatian was charged that on June 28 he committed a criminal assault on Lilian Emily Maddox. He was remanded until July 8.
Counsel for accused, in applying for bail, said Didovich called at his office, on Saturday, and stated that he had been chased by a man with a gun. Chief Detective Hammond objected to bail, saying: “This person is entitled to protection, although he may be a blackguard.” Bail was refused.
