THE MAYORAL ROBES.

, (To the Editor.) Sir, —The statement in your issue Of yesterday that our worthy Mayor is to be supplied with “robeß” at a cost of 45 guineas and that, inferentially, he had agreed to accept them, came as a shock to many of his friends and admirers. At such a time as this when real distress is rife, even at our doors, and we are told that the funds for relief work are nearly exhausted, not to speak of the pressing need of assistance in the earthquake zone, it is almost unbelievable that the Council should waste such a sum on a useless "bauble.” Surely the recently provided Mayor al collar is sufficient to indicate the honours and dignity of the Mayoral position. It is to be hoped that on reconsideration our respected townsman will forego this useless and unnecessary gew gaw’. —I am, etc.,

CITIZEN.
