MOTOR SPEED RECORD

HUSHHUSH NO. 2 PLANNED

POWERFUL. COSTLY MACHINES.

300 MILES PER HOUR. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.! (Australian Press Association.) (Received June 29, 10 a.m.) LONDON, June 29. In a dramatic manner, seated in Mr Louis Coatalen's Paris office, Kaye Don approved of the drawings of the most powerful motor car in the world, Hushhush No. 2, with which he will attack the world's land speed record. The drawings were immediately despatched to Wolvanshire, where the construction of the machine will begin in a secret corner of the works. In addition to being a most powerful car it will be the costliest in the world, namely, £25,000. It will be designed to travel at nearly 300 miles per hour. The biggest problem was wind pressure, but Coatalen believes that he will succeed in evolving a method of streamlining to prevent the car trying to fly instead of keeping to the ground. Don Kaye is one of Britain’s mo6t fearless and skilled drivers, and is the idol of the Brooklands race crowds-

Mr Coatalen was the designer of the first car in the world to exceed a speed of 200 miles an hour. The twin-engined Sunbeam, in which Sir Henry Segrave established the record of 203.7 miles an hour, was his work. In that car were installed two 500 horse-power Sunbeam aeroplane engines, and the successful run was made in March, 1927. The car was the first super-powered car to embody really sound streamlining, and Mr Coatalen s research in connection with that car confirmed certain beliefs in regard to wind resistance, wheel spin and stability. The soundness of the principles laid down by Mr Coatalen in pioneering that type of car was of great assistance to the designers of the two later Napierengined cars with which Sir Henry Segrave and Captain Malcolm Campbell improved on ■ the flying mile record.
