Sloknesa Prevalent. Influenza is very prevalent in this district. With the assistance of unmistakably winter weather, which appears to have Bet in in earnest, the influenza is compelling many dairy farmers to spend their winter, vacation indoors, if not In bed. 6ohool Committee. At a special meeting of the local ' School Committee to consider the list of assistant teachers submitted by the Education Board and to make a selection to All -the position of assistant at the local school, Mr. J. Buchanan presided, and there were also present Miss R. Aubin, Messrs C. E. Fear and T. C. Grace, and the secretary (Mr I. Miller). After a perusal of a list of 37 applicants it was decided to recommend the appointment of Miss A. Macky, of Paterangi. The hope was expressed! that the appointment of Miss Macky would reresult in a greater measure of permanency than had been the case in regard to the position of assistant here for some time. Sale of Stock. The ordinary stock sale was held on Wednesday, and though the weather was bad and the attendance in consequence small a very fair clearance resulted at satisfactory prices, especially for dairy heifers of good quality. Plunket Society. The local branch of the Plunket Society opened an afternoon tea stall at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, and met with fair patronage, resulting in an addition of £2 7s to the funds. The stall was conducted by Mesdames Richardson, Anderson, Allport and Beet add Miss Webb. Farewell. Friends and neighbours of Mr and Mrs Hugh C. J.one3, to the number of 60, assembled at the Memorial Hall, the occasion being a farewell social and dance in honour of Mr and Mrs Jones, who have sold out and are returning to England.

The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with songs, sketches and gramophone selections. A presentation of a travelling rug was made to Mrs Jones and a leather suitcase to Mr Jones.

In making the presentation Mr Graco said that during their sixteen years’ sojourn in Pirongia Mr. and Mrs. Jones had established a reputation for genuine neighbourliness in addition to grit and determination. Mr Grace voiced the hope that the Joneses would return to New Zealand. In the meantime, the gifts would remind them of the goodwill they left behind. Mr Buchanan paid a tribute to the worthiness of the guests of the evening. Mr J. T.'Johnson said that the qualities as settlers possessed by Mr and Mrs Jones were of the kind required by New Zealand. Mr Jdnes suitably returned thanks.

Songs were contributed' by the .Misses A. and R. Bell and Miss Robirtson, and a humorous Maori sketch by Mr T. G .Grace.

Football. Both the senior and third grade teams had a day out on Saturday, when each team notched a win with a large margin of points. The senior team defeated Mangahoe by 38 points to 3, and the third grade team beat High School by 40 to 9. Hockey. Two local girls—Misses Phyllis Siffleet and Rozelle Bell—will make the trip to Auckland next month as representatives of the Waipa hockey team. Motor Cycle Accident. ■ Mr Trevor Bray, who has been employed by Mr Eyre for the past year, met with a serious accident while riding his motor cycle. The fork of the cycle broke and Mr Bray was rendered unconscious by the fall, and did not regain consciousness until the next morning. Mr Bray returned to Pirongia during the week, but has had a relapse, necessitating medical attention. Father M. Edge, for many, years past priest of this parish, is about to leave for England, where he will visit his old home in Lancashire. Father Edge has had a long and serious illness, and hopes to improve his health considerably by the long sea voyage. The heartfelt wishes of his people for a complete recovery will go with their beloved priest.
