THE GAMING ACT.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT.

MINISTER’S ATTITUDE.

WOULD SUPPORT A PRIVATE BILL

(By Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

If the Gaming Amendment Bill is introduced next session it is hardly likely that It will be a Government measure, but Kon. P. A. de la Perrelle stated to-day that if any private members issued a Bill relating to the proposed amendments of the Gaming Act it would have his hearty and cordial support. GAMING LEGISLATION. MAY BE PRIVATE BILL. WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

For some time there has been a persistent move to allow of the introduction of the "double” totalisator, the telegraphing of bets to the < ourse and publication of dividends. An impression seems to have got abroad that any legislation on these matters will emanate from the Government, but this Is not likely to be so. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. P. A. de la Perellc, stated to-day if any private member introduces a bill relating to the proposed amendments of the Gaming Act it will have bis hearty and cordial support. He believed that the telegraphing of bets to the course was a legitimate mean** by which people from afar could have the opportunity of investment. He also considered that the newspapers should have the right to publish dividends. That right should never have been denied them. Dividends were known all over the countryside soon after a race was run, and in any case, newspapers came in from Australia with the amount of the dividends stated in them and no one made any objection.
