VITAL TO DAIRYING INDUSTRY.

(fo the Editor.)

Sir, —The deputation from the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., which waited upon the Minister of Agriculture when the Hon. Mr Forbes was in Hamilton last week and advocated that the Government should take over the testing and grading of all cream and milk, raised a question which will have the wholehearted support of every dairy farmer who is seriously desirous of doing the best foi the industry. The supremacy of our butter and cheese on the world’s markets is very seriously threatened, and, as we have Ijeen informed by leading experts in the trade from Home, the quality ol' our produce requires improving if we are to retain our prominence which, in short, comes down to £ s. d. The present system of company supervision of this matter is not at all as satisfactory as it would be if the Government took charge and appointed its own officials to carry out the grading and testing. The present system is far from satisfactory both as regards the figures of testing and grading and also the situation with many sheds from the hygienic aspect. This is a matter of very great urgency, as the future of the industry hinges upon an improvement in the quality of our produce.—l am, etc., SUPPLIER.
