DRUNKEN MOTORISTS.
YOUNG MAN LOSES HIS JOB. FINE OF £lO IMPOSED. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Thomas Gallagher, aged 23, motorcar salesman, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with having been found in a state of intoxication while in control of a motor-car, and with aggravated assault on a Maori girl. Statements made by witnesses for the police were to the effect that the gir! had been walking along Hobson Street when the car containing Gallagher and another man stopped near her. Accused had offered the girl a drive, which she had refused, whereupon he caught hold of her coat. Gallagher was a car salesman and had lost his position as a result of what had happened. The Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, said he would take into consideration the fact that accused had lost his position. On the first charge he would be fined £lO. A prohibition order would, be taken out and accused’s license endorsed. With regard to the charge of assault the magistrate said it seemed to be the result of drink and was not as serious as it might have been. He did not wish to start a young man off with a conviction for so grave an offence, and therefore he would dismiss the charge.
