A NOVEL DEVICE
INVENTION OF CHRISTCHURCH MAN A novel safety device for railway level crossings, working on an electrical contact system, lias been produced ivy Mr A. Jl. Surnmerton, of Christchurch, who will short 1 y give a demonstration of his invention before officials of tlie Railway Department in Wellington.
The principle necessitates the provision of generators on the engines,
which feed an arm projecting from side of the cab. For some distance on each side of the crossing a contact wire is erected, on which the arm presses when it comes up to it. lb.® line-side wire is supported on spring buffers on posts, so that the pressure is evenly maintained by the arm even when the train is travelling at speed.. Till the train is halfway over the crossing the wire keeps red danger lights burning each way on the road and green lights on the track. If necessary. an arc light over the centre of the crossing can he added to the illuminations. It is claimed for the device that it could also operate wig-wag signals, harriers or gates.
