MATANGI.

The New Year. The New Year received a gay welcome from the joyous crowd of merrymakers that filled the Matangi Hall on Monday, December 31. Visitors were present from all around, and the free bus from Hamilton proved very popular. The coloured streamers, balloons, and lanterns that adorned tin hall, and the paper hats and other decorations worn by the dancers, were in keeping with the carnival spirit that prevailed. The stage represented u drawing room, on the wall of which hung a clock that ticked off the dying hours of the Old Year and the first two hours of the New, before the gathering dispersed. Excellent music was provided by Hildreth’s Orchestra. Shortly after midnight the proceedings were enlightened by the arriva of Mr Jock Cameron, a leading chiel of the Hamilton Caledonian Society, and another Clansman with kilts and bagpipes. During the early part of the evening a 500 card tournament was heh in the supper-room for non-dancers and although there were not so man? as usual those players present had an enjoyable time. Caledonian Sports. Among the successful competitor? aU the Caledonian Society’s Gala Da? at the Lake on January 3, were tw< local dancers. Miss Muriel McKenzie tied for first in the local Novice Competition, and Miss Dorothy Baird was third in the Open Novice class.
