THE ENGLISH VISIT. ATTENDANCE AT TESTS. MELBOURNE HOLDS RECORD, h (From a Correspondent.)
MELBOURNE, Dec. 29. Melbourne has regained the world’s \ record for one day’s attendance at a Test match. It already had the aggregate and the best takings for a Test But Sydney still has the best gate receipts for one day-. The first day’s play at Melbourne was witnessed by 63,247 persons, who paid £6023. The crowd was larger than that which saw the second day’s play in the Sydney Test, but the money was not as big. Sydney’s figures were; Crowd 58,446; takings £6207. If the weather remains fine Melbourne will probably beat its own world's aggregate attendance of 238,812, and takings of £22,463. It is fortunate in having a Saturday and the New Year holiday for its Test. Yesterday’s attendance easily beat Melbourne’s previous record—49,4l3 on New Year’s Day, when Gilligan’s team toured Australia in 1924-25. The present series of Tests have yielded £29,194 in takings, as follows:
