SCOPE OF THEIR RIGHTS. VENTILATION IN THE COURTS. MAGISTRATES’ DECISIONS. (By Telegrapl)—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) (Received Jan. 9, 12 noon.) LONDON, Jan. 8. British Magistrates are being called on to determine the rights of the younger generation. In one case at Newport the Bench decided that a Grammar School headmaster was entitled to cane a schoolboy of 16 for smoking after hours though his father permitted it. When flogged before the scholars the boy showed fight until he was caught by two assistant masters, put across a desk and caned, kicking and bellowing wildly. The Magistrate awarded the headmaster damages, considering he was improperly summoned. In the second case a London Magistrate decided it was reasonable that a father should deprive Ills daughter of 20 of a latch key, because she was not home by ten o’clock and wanted to go to dances. The Association of Women’s Clerks officially expresses the opinion that the father’s viewpoint is preposterous, a girl of 20 being big enough to look after herself. Other critics point o.ut that within a year the girl will have a vote as good as her father’s.
