CATHOLIC CONVENT.

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY-

A SUCCESSFUL YEARGIFT TO FATHER O'CONNOR The brcaking-up ceremony for the Christmas vacation at the convent of Notre Dame des Missions yesterday was one of the most pleasant functions held in connection with the school for some years. Opportunity was taken during the ceremony to present Father O'Connor with a beautiful lace surplice from the pupils of the Convent School as a small appreciation of the kindly interest he had shown in their work during his time in charge of the Hamilton parish. Father O'Connor, in responding, thanked the children for the kind thought that had prompted the gift and congratulated the school on the high standard of work attained throughout the year. He expressed pleasure at the pleasant and enjoyable programme the children had provided and wished them an enjoyable vacation.

A concert programme provided by the pupils was indeed a tribute to the thorough and skilful coaching of the Sisters.

In her annual report the Sister in charge said the school year had been a very successful one. The roll number in the primary school had increased considerably, especialy in the infant department. Despite the fact that the attendance at the beginning of the year was very irregular owing to a great amount of sickness among the children, steady progress had been made in every division. The report forwarded by the Inspector of Secondary Schools stated that the courses followed were sound, that the test-books used were the best available, that the work done was very satisfactory, and that the discipline and tone of the school was excellent. It would, however, be to the advantage of the girls themselves if some definite arrangement could be made by the parents to allow them to remain at school long enough to complete the courses they had taken up. In the field of sport, also, the year had been very successful, the secondary "A" basketball team winning the Waikato championship and the primary "A" team being runners-up in their division. The primary school tennis team obtained a place in the finals of the interschool tournament.
