"THE MESSIAH."
ST. PAUL’S METHODIST CHOIR. A FINE PERFORMANCE. “ The Messiah ” was sung last night by an augmented choir in St. Paul’s Methodist Church, under the baton of Mr T. S. Webster. There was a large audience, and the well-known melodies of the seasonable oratorio made a strong appeal. Mr Webster had his forces well under control, a good tone and excellent balance being obtained, while there was delightful light and shade. The Hallelujah Chorus was given in an inspiring manner, and other outstanding .choruses were “ Lift Up Your Heads ’’ and “ Worthy is the Lamb."
The soloists did particularly good work.' Mrs V. Clark sang " Rejoice Greatly," " I Know That My Redeemer Liveth," and " Come Unto Him.'' sweetly and appealiugly. ?>lrs T. S. Webster gave a very sympathetic interpretation of "He Was Despised," bringing out all its beauties. Miss Ida Qrice's voice wes heard to advantage in " He Shall Feed His Flock." Mr J. Rattersby's fine voice was well displayed in " Comfort Ye" and " Thou Shalt Break Them," while Mr W. B. Williams' greatest success was secured in •'Why Do the Nations?" Mr Webster had a strenuous night, for besides conducting capably he presided at the organ, providing the accompaniments and several solo items in a manner that proved him a musician of, raxe gifts.
