Recorded Music

The "Maglo Flute" Orchestra.

Berlin State Opera Orchestra (conducted by Dr. Leo Blech), in "Magic Flute"—Overture (Mozart).

i The delightful overture to the 1 "Magic Flute" opens with a solemn, slow-moving introduction, which is followed by one of the most sparkling little allegros ever written. Having forgotten to provide an overture for the "Magic Flute" Mozart hurried home the evening before the first performance of the opera, and composed it within a few hours. Dr. Blech gives a sparkling and animated interpretation of the overture, which is splendidly recorded. Intriguing Music. De Groot and the Piccadilly Orchestra, in "If Only I Had You," and "Lolita." "Lolita" Is a little piece with a most intriguing Spanish "flavouring," and rt is most attractively played. On this other side of the record is a pleasantly melodious piece enjoying considerable popularity. De Groot plays as only De Groot can, and the performance of both pieces has the smooth finish and that indefinable charm that is characteristic of him. Peter Dawson Scores. Peter Dawson (bass-baritone), In "Acis and Galatea," Recit., "I Rage, I Melt, I Burn." Aria, "0 Ruddier Than the Cherry" (Handel), and "Honour and Arms" (Handel). Peter Dawson has made an extraordinarily fine record of these two famous Handelian airs. Either air is an exceptional test for any singer, but of course the difficulties presented are no difficulties at all in the hands of Peter Dawson. The immensely long, florid passages "come off" with wonderful effect, and for once in a way we are allowed to enjoy Handel's music and the singer's art with equal enthusiasm. A Parodied Prologue. "Laugh, Clown, Laugh," by Cooper Lawley, tenor —"What Do You Say?" by Jim Miller and Charlie Farrell. "Laugh, Clown, Laugh I" is having a popular run. The introductory bars of the accompaniment suggest a parody on the "Pagliacci" grand opera "Prologue," but the piece has a character of its own. An unusual piece of work, very well done. The companion number is also good.

Johnny Marvin. "ThinK of Me Thinking of You" and "Golden Gate," by Johnny Marvin. Johnny Marvin nas freqquent triumphant moments. One of these is in the irresistible appeal of "Think of Me Thinking of You."

Popular Songs. "Back in Your Own Backyard" (Harold Yates—Cooper Lawley) and "Down by the Old Mill Stream" (National Cavaliers). These are two popular songs that should please the multitude.

New Dance Music. Among the new dance records there is Paul Whiteman's orchestra in "My Angel" and "In My Bouquet of Memories," with effective vocal refrains. These are absolutely the very latest hits. Another good dance disc is \Varing's Pennsylvanians in "Laugh, Clown, Laugh 1" (waltz) and "The Dance of the Blue Danube" (foxtrot). Two excellent Argentine tango numbers, "Y Como le va?" and "El Choilo," come from the International Novelty Orchestra. George Olsen's Orchestra is in great form in "Just Like a Melody Out of the Sky" and "Because My Baby Don't Mean 'Maybe' Now" (foxtrots). The Hilo Orchestra presents "Lou'siana Lullaby" (waltz) and "My Bird of Paradise" (foxtrot). Nat ShilMet's Band and Waring's Pennsylvanians between them give us respectively the foxtrots "Get Out and Get Under the Moon" and "In the Evening."

LATEST RELEASES.

A Good Duet Bracket "Well, the Irish and the Germans Got Together" (Harry Jans and Harold Whalen) and "Let's Give Three Cheers" (Jim Miller and Charlie Farrell). Here we have two good duets in the popular style, with orchestral accompaniments, written in celebration of a victorious ocean flight.
