BYRD'S EXPEDITION. LYING OUTSIDE THE ICEPACK. WELL IN,THE CIRCLE. fRv •Teletrraph—Press Assn. —Copyrlsrht.) (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received Dec. 10, 10.40 a.m.) VANCOUVER, Dec. i 4. A message from the City of New York says: "We are lying outside the icepack waiting for it to open. As far as we can see to the east and west the pack extends in an unbroken line Whalers to the south report that the pack is very thick this year. It would be useless going in where we might be caught and held indelinitely. Our plan is to wait until the ice opens sufficiently so that a trip may be made alone the 180th meridian line. "We arc now much further down than usual and well inside the Antarctic circle, and 300 miles further south than Sir 11. Wilkins. "For the last two days the weather has been cold and clear. The ship is IvinK in a small bay. "The Eleanor Boiling departed on Tuesday, after transferring S 7 tons of coal, many bags or which were piled on the deck. As the result the ship ? like a barge and would be heavy in « sea May we all have our fingers Crossed praying for continued calm until we get Into the pack.
