The borough engineer, Mr Branch, in his report on work for the month, stated that the hot weather had caus-i ed considerable bleeding-of the bitumen roads, necessitating constant topdressing. General maintenance work on roads and footpaths had been carried out in the borough. The waterintake had been attended to and two blowouts mended during the month. The shed to house the chlorinator, which was expected to arrive shortly, was now under construction. The pressure reducing valve had been repaired and would be placed at* the school bridge, where it could be controlled by a separate valve. There was abundant evidence that garden hoses had been used extensively during the month. He thought that it would be advisable to restrict this practice during the daytime, in order to give the factories supplied by the borough an efficient service. He recommended that the hours for watering of gardens be restricted to between 5 to 8.30 p.m. and 5 to 7 a.m. It would be necessary to stipulate at the same time that in the event of fire all garden hoses would have to be cut off. Repairs had been made to several fire-plugs in the borough. The rest ground had been attended to, also the parks in the borough. A No. 0 auto air compressor was essential in the event of a breakdown of the bitumen sprayer, and he would recommend the purchase of one.
