A BETTING COMEDY.

THREE IN THE SPOTLIGHT ROTHERMERE V. JOYNSON-HICKS. LADY HOUSTON'S CHALLENGE. (By Telegraph—Press Assiv—Copyright.) (Australian Press Assoclafoo). (Receiced. Dec. 14, 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 13. Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, Secretary of State for Home Affairs and Lord Rothermere are engaged in a betting comedy, beneath all the spotlights of the press. Lord Rothermere declared mat a Conservative party victory at the general election was impossible. Sir W. Joynson-Hicks at a meeting of the Ladies' Imperial Club said: "If so, I shall lose a new hat to Rothermere." Lord Rothermere telegraphed to Sir W. Joynson-Hicks: " Suppose you make it money instead of hats. I'll bet you £IOO to £lO that the Conservatives won't have a majority at the election." Sir W. Joynson-Hicks telegraphed: " Thanks for your sporting offer, but I don't make money in bets. In order to show that I am as good a sportsman as you I'll bet you two hats to one that we beat Ramsay MacDonald and Mr Lloyd George put together." • Lord Rothermere has not replied but made the statement " Hicks is only talking through his hat. He knows the Conservatives have not the remotest chance. They are whistling to keep up their courage but they deceive no one."

Late to-night Lady Houston (the widow of the wealthy shipping magnate) entered the comedy and threatens to take all the spotlight. She has asked Lord Rothermere whether he will offer her in thousands the same odds as he offered Sir W. JoynsonHicks.
