The Otorohanga Operatic Society will give a performance of “A Country Girl” at Te Awamutu to-night. A tragic occurrence marked a visit paid to a patient in the Auckland Hospital yesterday afternoon by Mrs Mary Ratcliffe, aged 71, of Mount Eden. Mrs Ratcliffc’collapsed in one of the wards aL 4.30, and died an hour later. An advertisement in a New Zealand paper of November 17, 1868, reads: — •'Wanted, single man, under 30 years of age, for Hie Armed Constabulary Force'in the North island. Rate of pay 3s 6tl a day, with rations and clothing.” During the past week (writes our Morrinsville correspondent) several farmers have been offoring £2 10s per week and found for men lo work a team, and have been unable lo get suitable men. Judging from prices quoted in 1868 Ihe increase in the price of food and clothing would not account for the greaL increase in pay.
