NOTES AND COMMENTS. THE CANTERBURY CUP. Rapier was withdrawn from the Canterbury Cup. He was galloped on in the New Zealand Cup, and showed evidence of trouble in one of his hind tendons, and it was considered unwise to take any risk with him. Laughing Prince was backed confidently to beat his two rivals. Count Cavour led from the start, but when the straight was reached Laughing Prince drew away to win without an effort by three lengths while Count Cavour was ridden out to beat Black Mint by a length. Count Cavour is very much on the down grade. In the Jockey Club Handicap Bright Glow just headed Celerity 11. for favouritism, with Crown Area and Battle Colours next in demand. Goblin Market led Bright Glow and Benzora along the back, but Set Sail moved up after going two furlongs, and followed Goblin Market round the turn. Gelerity 11. was closing up from the back, leaving Crown Area in the rear. Once in the straight Crown Area put in a great run on the rails. He gradually overhauled the leaders, and beat Goblin Market by a head. Set Sail was a length away, with Benzora close up. Bright Glow ran well until a furlong from home and then stopped. Battle Colours made a run in the straight, but failed to sustain it.
