HAMILTON WEST.

Speaking at Hamilton West, Mr W. J. King took four of the qualities of a good citizen —courage, cheerfulness, honesty, and induslry. He illustrated each with anecdotes. A line instance of courage was B. C. Freyberg's lonely swim of two miles at Gallipoli. The speaker described graphically how Freyberg, painted black to avoid being seen, braved the perils of sharks, and swam ashore by night with a line of flares, then swan: back to the ship. He also recounted incidents of the battle of Paaschendacle, in which he took part, and handed round photographs showing conditions on the b-ttlefleld. A splendid example of cheer was contained in a humorous letter written by an officer at the front to headquarters under the most distressing conditions. The writer was killed two hours after sending the note. Honesty was illustrated by the action of the French nation in meeting its liability to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war. Industry was a quality that had to be cultivated by everyone, in the class-room, on the playing held, and in business. In conclusion, Mr King mentioned the good service the League of Nations was giving towards the abolition of war.
