The, speaker at Hillcrcst was .Mr J. E. Tidd. lie quoted the words of Sir Thos. Buxton: "The longer 1 live Die more I am certain that the great difference between men, between the feeble and the powerful, Ihe great and the insignificant, is energy—invincible determination —a purpose once fixed, and then death or victory. That quality will do anything that can be done, in this world, and no talents, no circumstances, no opportunities, will make a two-legged creature a man without it." The speaker referred to Buxton's long and active ! associaUon with Wilberforcc, who for fifty years worked whole-heartedly to secure the, emancipation of the Negro slaves before success was achieved in : the British Parliament by 283 votes to 16. Reference was made lo the inspiration to others in the various walks of life the successful flight of Ihe Southern Cross against numerous difficulties; the wonderful achievement of John Howard in the cause or prison reform, after many years of strenuous labour, backed by the enthusiasm of Elizabeth Fry, Anna Buxton, and Sarah Martin, in the same cause. „ „. , Mr Tidd said the memory of Bishop Patterson, Bishop Selwyn, and other missionaries, those who worked in the interests of the first factory laws, and many others, was made fragrant by steady purpose and years of patient toil and sacrifice. The enterprise of these heroes and heroines was an example and inspiration for the young life of the Dominion lo follow when the time ripened for them to take their place as citizens of a great Empire. There was always ample for willing hands to accomplish. Mr Tidd said he had learned with pleasure that Frank Forster, who had been selected as -one of the Dominion representatives of the forthcoming Jamboree in England, had received his primary education at the Hillcrcst School.
