RAILWAY SMASH.
COLLISION IN A FOG. EXPRESS AND GOODS TRAIN. WRECKAGE CATCHES FIRE. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian Press As.«n.—United Service.) LONDON. Oct. 13. A shocking railway collision occurred early yesterday morning at Charfield, Gloucestershire, between a mail train and a London Midland and Scottish goods train. The former caught fire after the accident. The disaster occurred in dense fog. Three of the coaches of the mail train were telescoped. Nine bodies have been recovered, and 26 people are in hospitalThe collision occurred under a bridge which carries a road over the railway close to the Charfleld station. The mail train caught the goods train with a~crash which awakened sleepers for two miles around. Fire broke out immediately amid the piied-up wreckage. One of the goods trains contained a petrol waggon which was smashed and sent up a huge blaze. Four coaches in the mail train were completely burned before the Are was extinguished. A Post Office sorter, who was a shell-shock victim of the war, lost his reason and had to be forcibly carried from the scene.
