MAKE YOUR OWN TELEPHONE.

(Sent by “Vanguard.”) Procure two tins (about the size of a 4oz pepper Lin), a reel of cotton, and a sheet of semi-transparent paper (similar lo what butchers use). Remove the bottom of tins with' a tin-opener, spread a piece of the paper over one end of each tin tightly. Bind paper around tin securely with cotton; pierce centre of each with needle; thread hole (from outside; with cotton; tie a short piece of a match on end to prevent cotton slipping through hole. The cotton should be of a considerable length—the longer the better. On the other end of cotton attach the other tin in the same way. In speaking the tins should he kept close to the mouth; the voice carries with remarkable clearness. A cone-shaped piece of cardboard attached to one end makes a good loudspeaker. The cotton must not come in contact with anything, otherwise the voice will not carry.
