DOMINION MUSEUM.

APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Mr W. R. R. Oliver, who has been appointed director of the Dominion Museum, was horn at Launceston, Tasmania, and came lo New Zealand when he was 12 years of age. Mr Oliver was transferred to llie Dominion Museum as senior scientific assistant in 1920, which position lie held up lo his present appointment. The new director has explored botanically and zoologically many parts of New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia and many islands in Lite South Pacific. He was a member of the Kcrmadce Islands expedition, which camped for 10 months on Sunday Island in 1908. On returning from war service in 1919 Mr Oliver stayed for five weeks on Tahiti, obtaining specimens which now form part of tiic Dominion Museum collection. Ho lias also visited Lord Howe Island, the Chalhams and the suiiAnlSrctic Islands, paying special attention to their flora and fauna. Mr Oliver is the author of numerous publications on zoology, botany and geology in various scientific periodicals, particularly on cetacea (whales), birds and inter-tidal life.
