OBITUARY.

VISCOUNT HALDANE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyrlgtu.) (Australian Press Association). LONDON, August 19. The death is announced of Viscount Haldane of Cloon, aged 72. Right lion. Richard Burdon Haldane, F.R.S., K.T., 0.M., P.C., LL.D., first Viscount of Cloon, was horn in 1856. Ite sat in the House of Commons as Liberal member for Hartingtonshire from 1885 to 1911, and was Secretary of State for War from 1905 to 1912, during which time lie introduced the Territorial force and various methods which materially increased the efficiency of the War Office. He had a deep knowledge of constitutional law. He translated Schopenhauser, and was learned in Hegel and other German philosophers. He w-as Rector of Edinburgh University from 1905 to 1908, and succeeded Lord Lorcburn as Lord Chancellor in 1912. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Thistle, April, 1913. Ho visited Canada and the United States, and addressed a remarkable gathering of lawyers. He delivered the Creighton lecture, March, 1914, on “The Meaning ol' Truth in History.” He resigned the Lord Chancellorship in the Cabinet crisis in May, 1915, and was created O.M. His mother died after attaining the age of 100. He entered the Labour Ministry as Lord Chancellor in January, 1924.

MR. J. H. WRIGHT.

The death occurred at his residence, Von Tempsky Street, Hamilton, today, of Jacob Henry Wright, a wellknown land valuer and agent, at the age of 62. The late Mr. Wright was born at Mount Albert and was a son of the late Mr. Jacob 11. Wright, of Penzance, Cornwall, England, who later became a well-known farmer of the Pukekohe district. Mr. Jacob Wright junior received his education at the Public School and the Auckland Grammar School. As quite a young man he went to Australia, where lie farmed for several years. On returning io New Zealand he entered into Hie land agency business, and was for years Waikato manager for Samuel Valle and Co. On leaving them he entered into business on his own account, but for a considerable time he has been living in comparative retirement, although his wide knowledge of property and his keen sense of values, caused his advice to be sought by dealers in prop-erty-and mortgages. lie had resided in Hamilton for 25 years, and was a well-known figure throughout the district, where ho was greatly respected. About a month ago Mr Wrigiit was taken ill and became confined to his bed and as already stated, be passed away to-day. The late Mr Wrighl (who was married twice), leaves a widow and two sons and three daughters, to whom general sympathy will be extended, llis sons are Messrs Cyril L. Wright and Norman N. S. B. Wright, ol' Hamilton, and liis daughters Mrs C. Sutton, Pukekohe, Mrs L- Morgan, Invercargill and Miss Sadie Wright, Hamilton. MR Pi. J. MITCHELL. EX-POLICE SUPERINTENDENT. AUCKLAND, Monday. The death of Mr Alfred James Mitchell, a former superintendent of police, occurred at I’onsouby on Saturday. He was 71 years of age.

Born in Devonshire, Mr Mitchell joined the police force in 1877. At one period of his career lie was a senior sergeant in Wellington, and later served as sub-inspector in Auckland. From the last-named position he was appointed in 1902 as inspector in Invercargill. He was placed in charge of the Auckland district when Mr Gutlen went to Wellington as commissioner. Mr Mitchell was transferred from Auckland to Christchurch in 1913, and he retired in the following year. Since then he has resided in Auckland.

MR C. R. CHAPMAN

AUGKLAND, Monday. Mr Charles Robert Chapman, who died last week, was Mayor of Dunedin in 1891-92. He was a son of Mr Hooert Chapman, who came out to Otago with his family in 1848.

CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. The death occurred yesterday of Mr W. It. Norton, of the firm of r lonks, Norton and Company, auctioneers. Mr Norton was well known m Lrofting circles, being the owner of irix Pointer, the New Zealand Cup winnei, and Bonnie Logan.
