REPRESENTATIVE GAME. AUCKLAND BEAT WAIKATO. , . A SIX-GOAL MARGIN. AUCKLAND, Saturday. "The first match of the season for the New Zealand Championship Challenge Shield took place at the Remuera ground this afternoon, when the Waikato representatives unsuccessfully advanced their claims against Auckland, the holders of the trophy. The* play was not up to shield standard, but at times there were glimpses of good movements and individual effort. The ground was in good order at the start, but quickly cut up considerable-, causing the ball to spin badly, and upsetting .Lhe calculations, of the players. Although the result was a win for Auckland by a wide markin—8 —2—the game was keen and interesting throughout. Auckland's superiority laying in the left of their forward line. The teams were:— Auckland.—K. Highfield. 11. Williams, W. Gardiner, G. Cole, C. Radcliffc, A. Steele, R. Phillpotls, C. Watts, E. Watts. P. Anlhony, D. Reid. Waikato.—-G. Fletcher, T. Ewen, P. Allen, W. Coodman, L. Spiers, 0. Finch, N. Bradley, Hobbs, G. Finch, Hampton, C. J. Spiers. Auckland won the bully and Allen checked twice by sending out at the 50 line. Bradley put in a run, but was stopped by Steele. An exchange of hits between Bradley and Steele saw play on the edge of Waikato's circle, only to be stopped by Fletcher. Fletcher roused enthusiasm in repelling the invaders. Spiers eased the pressure and Finch improved matters, but, Gardiner sent them back. E. Watts seized possession and streaking for the line beat the opposition except Fletcher, but from the rebound E. Walls scored. Auckland 1 "Waikato 0 After plav had hung at midfield, | Cole sent .to Walls, to Anthony, to Reid. Fletcher left the goal to smother the shot, but the latter wa:| too fast and found an open goal. Auckland 2 Waikato 0 I The game had made little progress • before Hobbs got away. The ball then went to Hampton, to C. J. Spiers, who sprinted into the circle and scored with arunning shot. Auckland 2 Waikato 1 For a lime play was of an even nature. A speculator by Radcliffc set Auckland in motion, but Allen and Ewen, though appearing somewhat shaky, mastered lhe situation. After a loose sortie by Waikato the Auckland van broke away, the ball going in quick succession from Anthony (o F.. Walls, to C. Watts, then Ph'ilpotts, who did the trick with a .splendid shot high into llic net. Auckland 3 Waikato 1 A long hit put Waikato on the move and Finch reached the circle almost unopposed, but, instead of shooting Iried to run into the goal, but Highfleld saved the situation. From a long hit by Hadcliffe, Reid trapped and centred, but Ewen cleared. Auckland had Waikato penned down and E. Watts, making an opening, reached the scoring arena where Philpotts dived in and just managed to get the ball into the net. Auckland 4 Waikato * Just before half-time Waikato got awav and made several attempts to shoot Hampton connected and then he was pulled by for sticks. The spell ended: Auckland ; * Waikato ' 1 Tho Second Half. The second spell opened by Waikato attacking. G. Finch breaking awav got in close proximily to the circle, the ball went lo Spiers, whose cross hit was unaccepted. Auckland rushed play to the other end, where Fletcher saved brilliantly. Proceeding lo the other end, Waikato had Auckland in trouble, Snell and Williams eventually, clearing from mid- : field. E. Walts put in a good run, but the Waikato defence held, and the forwards gaining possession, lightning work saw Bradley responsible for Waikato's second goal. Auckland 4 Waikato 2 A moment later from a breakaway on the Auckland left by Philpotts, who was stopped in the circle by Fletcher, the ball rebounded and Eric Watts whipped in and scored. Auckland 5 Waikato 2 Waikato retaliated and from a penalty corner Finch slogged the ball outside the post. Further attacking by Waikato was countered by Radcliffe, and a fast hit to Philpotts, who centred, gave C. Walt an opportunity, but he evidently did not realise the situation and transferred. Several sorties by the Waikato forwards kept Auckland on the defensive, but hard hitting lost chances. E. Watls was prominent in an Auckland onslaught, which produced a corner. Hampton got free, but Spiers immediately took charge, and after a\ splendid run, almost the full length i of the field, mis-hit when shooting, j but a moment later the same player j put a fast shot across the mouth of I the Auckland goal. Auckland rallied, . and from the efforts of E. Walts, Au- ! thony made no mistake. i Auckland 6 I Waikato 2 i Further play inside the Waikato 25 - j saw Philpotts centre, and Anthony , pushed the ball into the goal. Auckland 7 Waikato 2 Waikato were by no means dismayed, and set up a hot attack on the Auckland citadel, which escaped with a corner. Play hovered in the Auckland half until the home team worked the leather goalwards. Fletcher kicked clear, and Waikato again attacked. Gordon sent the ball in, but the forwards were unable to finish a"run by C. Watts, and a good centre saw Waikato corner, and from the resultant shot C. Watts notched another goal.
