ENDING STREET NOISES.
GERMANY OPENS COMPETITION. Germany is starling a war against street noises by opening a competition for the best scheme to abolish the «ierve-racking clatter and din of toe big cities. Grinding of street cars around curves, jolting of badly sprung vehicles, banging of garbage cans on pavements and noisy exhausts from old motors arc all on the blacklist, as well as street criers and the deafening chorus of motor horns generally All these noises are measurable by an instrument called the Backhausen sound meter. Traffic experts claim that most street accidents arc attributable to the nerve-destroying racket which is making city life hideous. Under the auspices of the Association of German Engineers, a prize of £4O is offered for the best solution. The competition is open until December 1.
