MAKE FARMING PAY.
Speaking of the problem of immigration a Canadian publication to hand states: "To aid immigration and yet keep it -wholesome has been declared to be a science. It involves complicated and expensive operations, yet there is one simple proposition which would go a long way to wipe them all out. Make farming prosperous and the land will fill up of itself. Our primary fault is that the farmer is taxed in the cost of his own living and in that of all who serve him, and all his dependents, which means pretty much, the whole community, which depends on his product. He is thus taxed for the benefit of some who, by taxing him and his dependents, confess that they depend on him for their living and wealth. This drag on the farming community, the industry -by which with the help of forest and ■mine, Canada pays for all she buys, is the drag on flic country's progress. Make farming prosperous and the land will soon be all settled and everything will prosper. That is the real crux of the problem. Keep farming on the edge of discontent and our progress will be slow and heavy -whatever we do to stimulate immigration."
