BRIGHT FOOTBALL. OLD BOYS IN GOOD FORM. TECHNICAL SAFELY DISPOSED OF. Old Boys accounted for Technical Old Boys by 27 to 11, thereby placing themselves in an enviable position as far as points for the Sage Cup are concerned. However, in pointing out their position.’it must he remembered that City have yet to play twice to draw level in games with Old Boys. In t the game on Saturday there were several outstanding features, among them being the two free kicks which made the combatants 3 alt in the first seven minutes. Two minutes after that Gillies notched a try for Technical, which Mitchell converted. Then again a notable achievement was the three tries—all of them fought for — gained by Collins, Old Boys’ new wing three-quarter, who was playing his third game here. An old Tirnaru High School hoy and a newcomer to the town, Collins again made a very favourable impression. Yet another feature of the game was a spectacular try made by Brough who made an individual dribble and run from the hall'-way line before touching dowh. Except for the first quarter Old Boys had it all their own way, the rearguard combination being well up to requirements.

'Old Boys 6^”” Technical 8 The next quarter opened with some more smart work among the Bed and Blacks, Kemp putting in some neat passing. Old Boys Increase Tally. A repeat performance was staged ■by Collins shortly after the changeover when he broke through in much the same style as before, touching down between the uprights. Hawke made up for his last shot with a substantial converting kick. Old Boys it Technical 8

Old Boys hac] iheir defence well tested, Gunn and Layne nearly penetrating. Greville made good progress for Old B-oys with a neat side-line kick but the Wiiites changed the venue of play with a similar kick a little later. McNamara charged goalwards with Old Boys’s backs in attendance hut the hall was neatly intercepted. From a scrum Gunn was collared and the ball went out to Collins whose pathway was an “open sesame” for the White’s goal. He rushed into the pack, however, in dodging a speedy back, and the play resumed in midfield. Technical forwards seemed to experience some difficulty in picking the hall up but the backs were playing well. Cheers arose when Tuck, Fitzgerald, Kemp and Collins combined in another smart passing movement but the wing went out in the grandstand corner. For Technical, St. George made-an excellent spurt through Old Boys’ frontier and the defence was tested for some time. Mitchell took a free kick which failed before the bell went for half-time. Technical on the Attack. Technical kicked off, the ball going to a line-out. Mitchell and Gunn made solo efforts to struggle through from throw-ins but the hacks were not supporting sufficiently in many instances. Mitchell and Pope opened up again but Gillies was too far j ahead to get the hall. He had it securely a little later and went at least 20 yards before being brought down. Old Boys’ hacks were well in advance following a kick by Kemp when Denz, White's half-hack, took a mark from it cleverly. Try Follows Speedy Dash. Fjxcitomcnt ruled when Fitzgerald obtained possession through a remarkable “save” by Kemp as lie was collared. Racing up the line the Red and Blacks’ centre three-quarter easily outpaced Ycndali and touched down. This was one of the best tries of the day. Hawke again converted. Old Boys 1G Technical 8 lYlitchell Kicks Again. Technical were attacking convincingly! in the next spell and were awarded a free kick on the twenty-five line; Mitchell sending the ball sailing between the uprights. Technical 11 Old Boys 10 Tuck was injured after a spirited Technical onslaught hut he was not obliged to leave t,he field. Bayly, Old Boy’s left wing, nearly got over and the back formation was responsible l’or some further brilliant passing resulting in Collins gaining possession. When about to be collared he passed, to Kemp who made the try. The kick was disallowed through the ball being touched after being placed in position. Mitchell converted ' with a lick which just, went in. Technical s Old Boys .. .. • - 3 Another brilliant Old Boys’ rush sot Fitzgerald and Kemp ahead of the pack. Kemp speeded up the field beautifully after snapping up a difficult pass. However, he was collared just before the line was reached. Hawke tried a pot for Old Boys, which missed. _ Coilins Gets Over. Snappy handling by Old . Boys '•backs had lis reward when Collins received' the ball from a passing rush on the wing and made a fine try in tne grandstand corner. Hawke’s kick failed.

ahead of the pack and fed Fitzgerald and Collins. They were nearly on their objective when the Technical forwards swarmbd round and smothered the ball, j Brough’J Solo Effort. Gillies led a promising dribbling attack a few minutes later but the hall changed hands before Brough caught it on the bounce, and with two opposing men in hot pursuit went from the .half-way line right up the field. He picked’the ball up after a long dribble and forced down triumphantly. Kemp failed to convert. * Old Boys 22 Technical .. .. •• 11Marks were taken by both sides on the half-way line, and the play drifted to Old Boys’ territory. Collins’, picking up from a bounce after a fumble at the White’s end followed up in splendid fashion and gained his third try for the day. Hawke converted accurately. Old Boys 27 Technical H ( It was novel to see an Old Boys passing rush" break down shortly afterwards. A series of line-outs eventuated on the grandstand side before Technical were allowed a free kick which gave them a temporary advantage.
