TWO PRISONERS ESCAPE.

FROM WT. EDEN GAOL. BOTH DECLARED HABITUALS. AUCKLAND. Saturday. John Buckley and Frank Bailer, habitual criminals, escaped from Mt. Eden prison last night. At live o'clock the usual routine of locking-up the inmates wss carried out. After tea, at 6.15, about 30 prisoners were paraded for school, which is held nightly until eight o'clock. Buckley and Bailer were among the number. Nothing untoward was noticed until the prisoners were actually at school. It was then found that Buckley and Bailer were missing. The alarm was given, but a thorough search failed to locate the men. Police stations in the Auckland district were immediately notified of the escape of the prisoners and searcli parties were sent out from the prison. It is known that both men can drive motor cars.

Both the men arc New Zealanders, with relatives in Auckland. Bailer, for breaking and entering and theft, was sentenced on June 2, 1927, to five years' imprisonment, and was declared a habitual criminal. For breaking and entering and theft. Buckley was sentenced to four years' imprisonment and declared a. habitual criminal in October, 1925.
