RACING

NEWS FROM TE AROHA. PREPARATIONS FOR NORTHERN. (Special lo the Times). TE AROHA, Friday. When Lady Spalpeen and Waltzer were given a round over the .jumps they acquitted themselves very creditably, hut Waltzer, who promises to make good as a hurdler, jumped straighter than the mare. Top Weight King Lu. Considering that he has not raced for about five months, King Lu, in being allotted 10.3 in the Members' Handicap at the Auckland meeting, has been highly assessed. He has done a fair amount of work lately, but even so may not be thoroughly wound up for a first day effort. When ridden by A. Tinker the Lucullus horse generally runs good races, but at time of writing it is not known whether the services of this horseman will be available. Queen Aroh In Cornwall. Queen Arch Is to be ridden in the Cornwall Handicap next week by Len Manson. The Marble Arch mare should at least run prominently with a vigorous rider as she is in excellent condition just now. Waltzer is to be a starter in the Carbine Plate, in which he will be riddcirby Mr J. W. Patten. J. H. Wallace's Team. Flying Tresses, a filly that showed plenty of speed when in work last season, lias again joined J. 11. Wallace's team. She is very gross at present but may be ready to race in the spring. The other members of the stable arc Tea Time, To Koroke and the Lassie Thurnham colt. Another Marble Arch. A recent addition to G. A. Reid's string is a four year old gelding by Marble Arch —Crown Rose, owned by a Waihou settler. He is quite a good specimen of a thoroughbred and is built for strength. Judging by his action on the training tracks he may come to hand early. Glen Star, in the same stable, is on -the easy list for a few days. Mr Lockyer's Private Team. Mr W. Lockyer, of Hunga-hunga, has just had erected some up-to-date loose boxes, and intends working his horses, Hunga-hunga and Golden Arch. He also has a lease of La Roma, who injured her fetlock at the last liotorua meeting, but it is not at all certain that this marc will race again. A Nice Quartette. It is not often that a Te Aroha owner-'tralner is represented by a team of four at a Metropolitan fixture, but Mr R. B. Hines is taking King Lu, Queen Arch, Lady Spalpeen and Waltzer to the Ellerslie meeting. They arc all looking especially well and Should acquit themselves creditably whether the racing trauk be soft or firm. King Lu was physicked last week and is much brighter as the result. Hunt Club Horses. \t the Waikato Hunt Club meet here on Wednesday, several horses in training were out to- qualify for Hunt Club events. They included King Ainans, who jumped in fine style; Taumai who, unfortunately, iell heavily at a past and rail fence; Hunga-hunga and Spark. Track Work. The plough and grass gallops were in good order on Thursday morning, and most of the trainers were on the scene with their charges. . Lady Mestor and the Lassie Thurnham colt cantered once round and sprinted the last furlong. The colt, rising two years old, mustered up speed very quickly and beat the illly by a fair margin. He gives promise of being an ellicient galloper. The Glen Albyn and Marble Arch—Crown Rose geldings went together once round on the plough, and the General La-tour — While Sox two year old put in serviceable work. To Koroke was associated Willi KosoVo over a mile, but they were not out for time making. Te Koroke, who is very forward in condition, finished in front under a strong pull. Orchus appeared to be finishing rather better than Taurimu over live furlongs. Queen Arch and Lady Spalpeen were galloped a mile, the pace being on most of the way. The time registered was 1.50 2-usecs, and the Marble Arch mare had a fair margin in her favour at the winning post. Taumai and Ruffles were on the track, but were not worked, and Flying Tresses was allotted twice round at a slow pace. The gallop of the morning was shown by Nancy Lee, King .Lu, Gold Rain and Waltzer. 'All carried considerably less than their Auckland weights. An even start was effected at the live furlong post, but King Lu at once assumed the lead and led by two lengths Lo the approach to the .straight, where Nancy Lec_ and Waltzer were running'together. Nancy then put in her run and quickly catching the leader they finished together, with Waltzer two lengths and Lady Spalpeen a further length away. The lime was a lick under 1.0.
