RAILWAY LOSSES.
A HEAVY YEAR. TOTAL DEFICIT £781,000. WELLINGTON, Friday. A working profit of £1,349,840 is shown by lite Railway Department's working account for the year ended March 31, as compared with £1,498,553 for the previous year. The amount of interest due to the Consolidated Fund was given by lhe Prime Minister last, week as £2. (3d,807, so that the loss on operation was £781,021, and allowing for the subsidy of £489,508, the department's deficit will be £291,453. Following are details of the revenue and the expenditure for the last two years:— REYE.NUE.
EXPE.NDITURE.
Subsidiary services include refreshment rooms, advertising and road motors. The total net revenue, exclusive of subsidy, was £1,349,840, which was £148,707 less than in the previous year. The North Island railways contributed £830,375, a decline of £149,771; the South Island railways £211,350, a decline of £73,093 while net receipts from miscellaneous services, £308,121, showed an increase of £74,757. The revenue per mile of railway on the North Island main lines and branches was £3280, as compared with £1721 on the South. Island main lines and branches. The expenditure was £2048 and £IOO3 respectively. Passengers carried are classified as follows, the previous year's returns being given in parentheses:—First class, 1,218,180 (1,417,709); second class. 8,080,971 (8,887,290); road motor services, 800,035 (200,955); totals, 10,159,192 (10,500,020). Stock and other goods traffic compare as follows:—Cattle (number), 459,943 (391,312); sheep and pigs (number), 9,312,987 (8,910,847); timber (tons), 571,321 (604,124); other goods (tons), 6,283,544 (0,109,312).
