RITUAL AND TOLERANCE.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —For some days I have \Vhited in vain for an abler pen than mine to refute the statement made by “Catholicus” that “there is only one religion that is universal —the one of which the Pope is the head.” Owing to the spread of the Gospel there are numbers all over the world who, whatever their different views on minor matters, acknowledge only one Saviour and one Head—the Lord Jesus Christ, and Him alone. And it is they who form the church Catholic. In the conclusion of his letter, “Catholicus” quotes Professor Freeman. It was this Professor Freeman who was the originator of fhe legend that Fronde was inaccurate as an historian. yet when the latter, as Professor of M' lorn History, gave his lectures at Oxford his audiences crowded the hall lo (he dJors, but when Professor Freeman gave his lectures on the same subjects the attendance was so scanty that Freeman grew very angry, and attributed the lack of interest to the lack of intellectual discernment on the part of his hearers —an Oxford audience! (See articles, Froude and Freeman, Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edition). History is a subject of which we are lamentably ignorant, and as there is a great underground •campaign going on to-day to falsify our national annals, let us choose a reliable historian; one who draws up the past with full references by which the accuracy of his scholarship can be tested. In writing thus I would add that I do not by any means side with Mr Warren, but his letter has been so ably and comprehensively dealt with by your correspondent of last night (May 22) that it is not necessary to add more. —I am, etc., TRUTH.
