LONDON WOOL SALES.

SERIES REVIEWED. PRICES SLIGHTLY HIGHER. KEEN DEMAND THROUGHOUT. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyrljfbt.) (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, May 22. The wool sales closed slightly on a higher basis than at the opening. There were catalogued 100,544 bales, and it is estimated that 17,000 bales were sold to the Home trade, to the Continent about 49,500, and to America 1000, 33,000 bales being held. Competition was keen and general throughout. Continental buyers bought largely of merions and puntas, ‘and the Home trade was active in crossbreds and slipes. Thanks to the strong competition of German, Swiss, and Alsatian spinners prices for line merinos were well maintained. The broader sorts for top-making were also very firm. Faulty carbonising sorts hardened as the sales progressed, except for scoureds, which are still about 5 per cent, below March rates. In crossbreds finest partly recovered the opening decline. Medium and lower grades have been in sellers’ favour. Slipes did not maintain the abnormal March rates, being generally Id to ljd cheaper. Medium and lower grades were in strong demand, hut unchanged in price. In lambs merinos were irregular; choice firm, and others generally from par to 5 per cent, below March 1; crossbreds were firm, but unchanged in price. New Zealand clips N/M averaged 17d; Hutt, 17d.
