SHIPPING HOLD-UP.
CONFERENCE GRANTED. OWNERS’ FIRM ATTITUDE. ■ WILL CONSIDER NO COMPROMISE. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, May 21. A message from Melbourne says that in response to a further request from ihe Australian and New;, Zealand Council of Trades Unions for a conference lo discuss the cooks’ strike, the ship-owners have replied granting the request. They state, however, they have already announced the terms on which a settlement is possible, and there can be no compromise on ibis matter, as the terms embody a vitalprinciple. If, knowing this, the council still wishes to meet the owners in conference the latter, as a matter of courtesy, will not refuse. A conference at Melbourne between the executive of the Council of Trades Unions and the representatives of the marine unions and the shipowners has been commenced. So far it has not reached a basis for a settlement of the dispute. At the conclusion of a meeting of marine cooks in Sydney to-day the secretary, Mr .1. Todehope, announced that it had unanimously reaffirmed the attitude of the union that it would not tolerate the interference of _ the Australian and New Zealand Council of Trades Unions in the dispute without the consent ol' the union. The strike position is therefore unchanged.
