GARDEN PARTY.

AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE. FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS. AUCKLAND, Saturday. A garden party was given at Government House this afternoon by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson for representatives of various industries in Auckland. The gathering numbered about 800, and the guests appeared thoroughly to enjoy the thoughtful hospitality of their Excellencies. As the guesis arrived they assembled on the lawn, where the Garrison Artillery Band provided a musical programme. Shortly after three o’clock their Excellencies advanced to the terrace, accompanied by the members of their personal staff, Ihe Mayor (Mr George Baildon) and the Mayoress (M.rs A. D. Campbell) and the Town Cleric (Mr J. S. Brigham) and Mrs Brigham. llis Excellency said that he desired, on his own behalf and on behalf of Lady Alice, to welcome their guesis. He trusted they would make themselves at home and appear to he at home. Her Excellency and he desired that the guests would feel free to wander through ttie grounds and through the house, seeing all that they desired to see Sir Charles then explained the facilities which had been provided for afternoon tea, and said that Her Excellency and tic would like to shake hands with the people. The gathering expressed appreciation with hearty applause, and proceeded to avail themselves of the invitation In he personally greeted by their Excellencies. Then followed a free and happy visit by the people as a whole lo Ihe various rooms of Government House. The guests appieeiated ihe extensive nature of the preparations for their enjoyment, and m particular the many artistic touches which had been given to the furnishing or tables and the setting out o valuable plate and specimens of art from various parts of the *vorld. \s llis Excellency remarked m welcoming the guests, Ihe weather was not as kind as it might have been, hut nevertheless rain held off, and the function passed off with complete suecess.
