UNEMPLOYMENT.

POSITION AT PALMERSTON. CONDITIONS APPALLING. Sonic interesting views on the question of unemployment in Palmerston were expressed to a reporter by the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr A. J. Graham), whose efforts to minimise unemployment in Palmerston North are well known, and are appreciated by men out of work in the town. "It is very true," he said, "that conditions for this time of the year are appalling. It is a position that the municipal executive will consider at its meeting in Wellington, and it is probable that (here will be some recommendations made to l.hc Government." Something would have to be done, he said. Things could not .so on as they were. Local bodies could not always be raising relief funds, and the public could not always Ik 1 subscribing 10 unemployment funds. It was diflicult to diagnose the situation, foe it seemed lhat relief funds were only palliatives —they pave relief but they did not cure. What was the cure? Was it more intense cultivation on the part of the fanner? Was it less "go slow" policy on the part of the labouring men'.' Was it the need for greater thrift on the part of the people as a whole? If only lhat i|ould be found out thi 1 whole position would automatically solve itself. "Certain it is," said Mr Graham, "that in any young country like this conditions like these should not exist. My own impression is that throughout there is a need for greater application to work." The figures for the Unemployment Bureau in 'Palmerston show that, for the week ended April 7 there were 35 married men, with 79 dependants, out of work in Palmerston North, and also 11 single men. Tim next week there were 27 married men with 73 dependants unemployed, and 14 single men.
