EDUCATION OF WORKERS

GATHERING AT FRANKTON. DEBATE AND SOCIAL. INTERESTING PROGRAMME. On Thursday evening a very pleasing and enjoyable function was held in the Railway Institute, Frankton Junction, when the railway class of the above Association opened the session with a social evening. Mr F. Brewer, chairman of the Waikato district, presided at the request of the class.

The programme consisted of a debate on the Daylight Saving Act, in which Messrs Robinson, Fuller and Dwyer took the affirmative side, and Messrs Brown, Staunton and Gavan the negative. Both sides marshalled their facts and arguments in good style, and showed a knowledge of the art of public speaking. After the debate by the principals the audience was invited to express its views, and the. invitation was accepted by several ladies and gentlemen. A reading of the short play, "The Dear Departed," in which Misses Bradley, Green and Gavan, and Messrs Brown, Jones and Mitchell took part, followed, and was very creditably given. Vocal items were given by Miss Clark, Messrs L. Eskrigge. Exelby, Cox, Fricker and the Frankton Railway Male Choir, under the conductorship of Mr M. K. Mara. -AH these items were very capably rendered, the items by the choir proving particularly enjoyable. Mr T. N. Pemberton, M.A., F.R.E.S, delivered an address on the W.E.A. movement, pointing out its advantages and the scope of its activities, and urging on all the advisability of joining up with the movement. Mr Stephens, B. Com., also addressed the gathering in support of Mr PemberI ton's remarks.

After supper had been dispensed the hall was cleared for dancing, which was kept up till midnight. A special word of thanks is due to Miss Martin for her very able work as accompanist to the various 'musical items, and to Miss Flynn, who so very kindly supplied the dance music.
