DAMAGED STEAMER.
MISHAP WHILE BEING TOWED. (By Telegraph--Press Association.) WANGANUI, Friday. The steamer Gale, which had her propeller stripped on Wednesday when entering the harbour left here at 10. IS this morning in tow by the tug Teravvhiti, bound for Wellington. An hour later the vessels drifted apart.. Presumably the tow line fouled the tug's propellors. A strong northwesterly wind was blowing and a fairly big sea was running. The Gale drifted rapidly to leeward. After an hour's delay the tug again approached the steamer, but at 1.30 p.m. had not succeeded in getting hooked on again. ON WAV TO WELLINGTON. WANGANUI, Saturday. The Gale remained at anchor a few miles down the coast last night, and the Wanganui harbour tug went out to stand by in case of emergency. This morning the tug took the Gale in tow, and is row proceeding to Wellington. ANXIETY FOR TUG. LAST MESSAGE YESTERDAY. WANGANUI, Saturday. Anxiety is felt in Wanganui regarding the fug Terawhiti, which has not been sighted since last night, and no wireless communications have been received by vessels here. The last message received from the Terawhiti was at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, •reporting all O.K. The Terawhiti never took .the Gale in tow at any stage of the night. TOWED BY WANGANUI TUG. WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Gale is being towed by the Wanganui tug Karhanui, not. by the Terawhiti. Why is not stated, but probably the tow-rope fouled the Terawhlti’s propeller when it broke. Later. The Harbour Board reports that the tug Terawhiti is proceeding slowly and is due to-night.
