NEW PRAYER BOOK.

SOME OF ITS WEAKNESSES.

OUTLINED BY THE PRIMATE

WELLINGTON. Thursday. Some of the weaknesses which he saw in the Prayer Book revision measure which was before the British House of Commons last year were enumerated by the Primate of the Church of the Province of New Zealand, Archbishop Averin, in his presidential address at. the opening of General Synod this afternoon.

" my mind,” said the Archbishop, “its weakness consists: (1) In the retention of the ornaments rubric; (2) in providing alternative services for the administration of the Sacraments; and (3) in permitting continuous reservation. Whatever may he the • ultimate fate of the measure in England I should be sorry to see the Church of this province accept it as it stands. We shall join with the whole Church, I am sure, in sympathising with the great and venerable Archbishop of Canterbury in the disappointment which he has suffered by the temporary rejection by the British House of Commons of the fruits of his fellow bishops’ twenty years’ labour.”
