CAPT. CANT IMPRISONED.
ON EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGE. £l5O INVOLVED^ A PLEA OF GUILTY ENTERED. (Received February 11, 8.45 a.m.) LONDON, February 10. Three months’ imprisonment was imposed on Captain Cant, who pleaded guilty to embezzling £l5O belonging to the New Zealand Government The prosecutor said the Government had sent Gant home to navigate the motor vessel Maui Pomare from Ireland to New Zealand, placing certain moneys at his disposal. While Gant was in Ireland Sir James Parr (High Commissioner) was informed that there were certain charges awaiting him in New Zealand and Sir James Parr telegraphed to Cant releasing him from his duties. Cant shortly afterwards disappeared taking £l5O of the New Zealand Government’s money. He surrendered to the police on February 4. Cant, in the dock said “I did not know what I was doing. Some power swept over me. These charges in New Zealand are due to unscrupulous junior officers who have stabbed me in the back when 11,000 miles from home.” The magistrate said it was possible the charges were trivial. One allegation, namely “personal misconduct” mighi merely have been drunkenness.
