MYSTERY SOLVED
AN INGENIOUS THIEF. NEW YORK, September 10. Stealing “X’s" off motor tyres is another new industry which has been created by the motor trade. A traffic policeman in an American pity lost' the '“X’s.” He' had placed them—in chalk —pn the tyres of parked cars to' check the, time they were parked, and to help him issue a few summonses if they overstayed the parking time limit. Every time tie came hack to check Llie cars were there, but the “X’s” had disappeared. The mystery was solved when another policeman saw a free-lance carduster industriously rub the marks off the tyres, following the marker at a discreet distance.
His story to the owner was, “I saved you a quid; it’s worth a couple of boh,” or words to that effect. The magistrate was lenient. \He only separated the duster from £2 of Ills profits.
