PUKETAHA.

Croquet. The Pukelaha Croquet Club’s openpng day on Wednesday was largely attended, quile a number of new members and their friends being present. The day was beautifully fine, and the green lawns and bright dresses of ihe players made a very attractive picture. The president, Mrs F. R. Scddon, welcomed the visitors, and expressed her pleasure at such a large gathering of players and visitors. During the afternoon a progressive tournament was played, the winner being Mrs N*. Speedy, and Mrs D. uic iarimL

Tennis. Saturday was quite a gala day, when the tennis courts were officially opened for play. In a few well-chosen words, the persident, Mr 0. Pound, welcomed all present and then called on Mrs Pound to send the first ball over the net, which was well and truly done. There was an unusually large gathering, and with the extra court laid down this year the members will get more play, and a very much higher standard of tennis is expected. Maori Missions. The Rev. Seamer and party of the Methodist Maori Missions held service in the schoolroom on Sunday. Pukelaha residents have seldom had the opportunity of attending such a unique and beautiful service, the singing of that old hymn, “Jesu, —Son of Peace,” in Maori, to their own instrumental accompaniment, being particularly appreciated. Ratepayers* Meeting. At the bi-monthly meeting Mr N. Speedy occupied the chair. After the routine business had been disposed of several affairs of local interest were discussed. Drainage matters, being of paramount importance, occupied a good part of .the time, the cost of the proposed opening ol' the Komokorau, in proportion to benefits received, being considered unsatisfactory by many. The secretary was instructed to communicate with other rural organisations, to see if by any joint efforts the Hamilton’Borough Council could not be induced to proceed with the erection of the proposed bridge to Hamilton North. This inlet to the saleyards is a long-fcit want, Hie undesirability of stock being driven through the one already congested thoroughfare being apparent to all.
